Chronology

A woman takes a career break to be a stay-at-home mom, but soon her domesticity takes a surreal turn.. Originally intended to be released directly to streaming on Hulu, but strong reception from test screenings prompted Searchlight Pictures to instead give it a wide theatrical release.. Featured in Graham Norton and guests: Bruce Springsteen/Amy Adams/Vanessa Williams/Bill Bailey/St. Vincent (2024). I was invited to a screening and Q&A with the director. This film is much more artsy and obtuse than I expected.

The central family is unnamed

So we’ll just have to refer to them as Mom, Dad, Son for short. Mom is a frustrated former artist, complete with MFA. Now she’s a frustrated stay-at-home mom with a two-year-old terror. He’s blond; Mom is redheaded and Dad has brown hair. This was a real bummer for me. Dad has a big job that involves traveling and he’s gone for a week at a time.

Amy Adams is absolutely amazing in the role

Director Heller is more interested in the magical realism part of the script than giving us details. I loved the scene she has with her former classmates, all of which are accomplished to some degree. She might as well be a fly on the wall at the diner. I also loved the mom’s scenes with dogs, which are plentiful. It seems like each of the three main dogs physically corresponds to one of her friends. But I kept picturing Amy Schumer in the role!

Scoot McNairy is fine as her husband

I felt like the movie was beneath her. She should be on Oscar level obviously, not this experimental madness. This is an unattractive couple on the big screen. Who says Hollywood is all about glamour? Zoe Chao, as one of her mom friends, is a stunning beauty who completely steals every second of her screen time. Mary Holland and Archana Rajan are entertaining as her other mom friends.

Jessica Harper is fantastic as the librarian Norma

The director tried to hide the setting, but it was clearly LA. It seems like it was filmed there just because AA lives there. I didn’t hate the movie, but I came away disappointed with Adams’ choice to make it. Being the best lead dog is a big deal. However, this seems like a waste of her talent. I wanted to scream at the sky afterwards too.
